The little girl with 56 perfect blond ringlets and an air of relentless determination was so assured that the usually unflappable Adolphe Menjou, her co-star in her first big hit, “Little Miss Marker,” described her as “an Ethel Barrymore at 6” and said she was “making a stooge out of me.”

Remembering Shirley Temple Black

It is very rare for a child star to keep her fame until her later years.
The dimpled, precocious and determined little girl who in the 1930s sang and tap-danced her way to a height of Hollywood stardom and worldwide fame that no other child has reached, died on Monday night at her home in Woodside, Calif. She was 85.

Shirley Temple Black’s Rise to Fame

Born April 23, 1928, she was an American film and television actress, singer, dancer and public servant, most famous as a child star in the 1930s. As an adult, she entered politics and became a diplomat, serving as United States Ambassador to Ghana and later to Czechoslovakia, and as Chief of Protocol of the United States.

At Zanuck’s request, Shirley Temple Black‘s parents agreed to four films a year from their daughter (rather than the three they wished), and the child star’s contract was reworked with bonuses to sweeten the deal. A succession of films followed: The Little ColonelOur Little GirlCurly Top (with the signature song “Animal Crackers in My Soup“), and The Littlest Rebel in 1935. Curly Top and The Littlest Rebel were named to Varietys list of top box office draws for 1935. In 1936, Captain JanuaryPoor Little Rich GirlDimples, and Stowaway were released.
